Mezzo-soprano
Mezzo-soprano Miya Higashiyama is making her debut with Chicago a cappella in the 2025-26 season.
Miya (pronounced Mee-ya) Higashiyama, an Asian American Seattle native and Northwestern University alumna (Master of Music), is a mezzo-soprano with focuses in opera, musical theatre, choral singing, and commercial music. She currently sings regularly with the Lyric Opera of Chicago (Chorus and Unlimited), Grant Park Chorus, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Music of the Baroque, and Church of the Ascension. Miya was most recently seen as Frida Kahlo in Lyric Opera of Chicago’s “Frida Kahlo and the Bravest Girl in the World” which toured in fall and spring of this past season. She sang in Des Moines Metro Opera’s 50th anniversary season as Moth in A Midsummer Night’s Dream as an Apprentice Artist, has placed in The Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition, and the National NATS Competition. When she is not singing, Miya independently writes and directs her own films, and creates content surrounding film and television on social media.
