RELEASE July 27, 2007
CHICAGO A CAPPELLA MAKES WEST LOOP ITS NEW CONCERT HOME Acclaimed vocal ensemble moves concert series to the West Loop neighborhood for three concerts in 2007-08 Chicago, IL — Chicago a cappella, the city’s most acclaimed chamber vocal ensemble, will move its Chicago concerts to the West Loop neighborhood beginning with Days of Awe and Rejoicing: Hidden Gems of Jewish Music, the group’s season-opener, on October 11. The nine-voice group has performed regularly in Chicago since its founding in 1993, but chose Merit School of Music’s Anne and Howard Gottlieb Hall as its new home after a thorough search for an acoustically superior venue. In two short years since the Merit School moved into its new home on Peoria Street, Anne and Howard Gottlieb Hall has become known as one of the city’s premiere chamber music venues. Already home to numerous instrumental chamber ensembles, including the Chicago Chamber Musicians, the concert hall will now host professional vocal music, as Chicago a cappella brings its fun and innovative style to the West Loop. Chicago a cappella will perform two additional concerts at Gottlieb Hall during its 2007-08 season: Romanticism and Rock ‘n’ Roll, a fun mix of two different styles of music, on February 22, 2008; and Voces latinas, featuring new choral works from Latin America, the Caribbean, Spain and Portugal, on April 18. An additional concert, Holidays a cappella: The Season of Light will be performed at Fourth Presbyterian Church on Michigan Avenue on December 7. Chicago a cappella is one of the area’s most accomplished and innovative vocal ensembles. Spanning a repertoire from Gregorian chant to the Beatles and beyond, the nine-voice group is acclaimed for its superb ensemble singing, fascinating programs, and intimate, engaging performances under founder and artistic director Jonathan Miller. Since 1993, Chicago a cappella has presented over 100 concerts in the Chicago area in addition to appearances in ten states and in Mexico. The ensemble has released six CDs and has been hailed by the Chicago Tribune for its “wit, imagination, and flawless intonation.” American Organist magazine recently praised the group’s “breathtaking ensemble and control [and] stylistic elegance...Chicago a cappella is a jewel in the crown of Chicago's musical life.” Chicago a cappella makes its West Loop debut with Days of Awe and Rejoicing: Hidden Gems of Jewish Music on Thursday, October 11, 7:30 pm, at Anne and Howard Gottlieb Hall at Merit School of Music, 38 S. Peoria Street in Chicago. Additional performances of this concert take place in Oak Park (October 13) and Evanston (Oct. 14). The program will include a newly-commissioned work by Chicago composer Stacy Garrop, the first of five new commissions as part of a year-long series to celebrate Chicago a cappella’s 15th season. Future commissions will include works by Rollo Dilworth and Tania León. Chicago a cappella’s four concert programs during 2007-08 will include performances in Chicago, Evanston, Oak Park, and Naperville.
