A message from our president and executive director

Dear friends,

Some wonderful things happened this season at Chicago a cappella. We hope you’ll help us continue the good work.

In February, we discovered Abundance. At our concert by that name, audiences responded to our call for donations to the Greater Chicago Food Depository…not with a few cans of soup, but with bags upon bags of groceries. We collected almost 500 pounds of food—providing 371 quality meals for the hungry in our community.

Elizabeth Grizzell at Naperville North H.S.Also this year, Chicago a cappella launched an educational program for high school choral students. Through a donor-supported initiative at Naperville North High School, artistic director Jonathan Miller and mezzo-soprano Elizabeth Grizzell (left) led workshops for student singers. The school’s Madrigal Ensemble rehearsed and performed with us at our holiday concert at Wentz Hall, and our ensemble joined the school's choirs at their spring concert. These educational projects, which include free tickets for the students, are part of Chicago a cappella's work to enrich the lives of students through training in and exposure to professional choral singing. Based on the success of the Naperville pilot, we hope to extend this effort in the years ahead to all the communities in which we perform.

Our artistic work continued to flourish as well. The Chicago Tribune declared us “one of the Midwest’s smartest vocal chamber ensembles” and raved about our “fine-tuned ensemble and secure blend.” Classics Today declared our new Christmas A Cappella CD “absolutely right-on in every respect…an unqualified success.”

Our audiences agree—in a year that has seen many arts groups cutting back on performances, people are subscribing to Chicago a cappella at record levels. Even so, ticket sales support less than half our operating costs. We need your help today to ensure that we can continue to offer what people are clearly craving—meaningful artistic experiences and a connection to what is most important.

Please support our good work with a generous contribution today, so that we can create more good things tomorrow. Thank you for your help.

Best regards,
Helen C. Gagel,  President, Board of Directors
