Chicago, IL — Chicago a cappella has unveiled its new logo and website and announced its 2010-2011 season of concerts. The acclaimed vocal ensemble will produce four concert programs during the upcoming season, with performances in downtown Chicago, Evanston, Naperville, and Oak Park.
Chicago a cappella will open its 18th season in October with Tastes of Paradise: Music for Pleasures of the Palate. The program will be a whirlwind trip through the history of food and drink, with music about beer, wine, spices, coffee and tea, chocolate, and more. Highlights include Paul Carey’s cycle Play With Your Food!, medieval and modern drinking songs, movements from J. S. Bach’s Coffee Cantata, and “Java Jive.” The concert takes place Saturday, October 2, at 8 pm, at Nichols Concert Hall, 1490 Chicago Avenue in Evanston; Sunday, Oct. 3, at 4 pm, at Pilgrim Congregational Church, 460 Lake Street in Oak Park; Saturday, Oct. 9, at 8 pm, at Anne & Howard Gottlieb Hall at Merit School of Music, 38 S. Peoria Street in Chicago; and Sunday, Oct. 10, at 7:30 pm, at Wentz Concert Hall, 171 E. Chicago Ave. in Naperville.
In December, the ensemble ushers in the holiday season with Holidays a cappella, featuring carols from Mexico to Scandinavia, folksongs, Chanukah melodies and Christmas spirituals. Performances take place Sunday, December 5, at 4 pm, at Wentz Concert Hall in Naperville; Thursday, Dec. 9, at 7:30 pm, at Nichols Concert Hall in Evanston; Friday, Dec. 10, at 8 pm, at Fourth Presbyterian Church, Michigan Avenue at Delaware in Chicago; and Sunday, Dec. 12, at 4 pm, at Pilgrim Congregational Church in Oak Park.
In a unique departure from its past, Chicago a cappella will be joined on stage by pianist and music director Patrick Sinozich in February 2011 for The Red Carpet of Sound, a concert that puts a cappella textures side by side with voice-and-piano combinations. This intimate salon will include German Romantic partsongs of Schumann and Brahms through contemporary songs, exploring new worlds of musical texture previously unheard on Chicago a cappella’s stages. The concert takes place Friday, February 4, 2011, at 8 pm, at Wentz Concert Hall in Naperville; Saturday, Feb. 5, at 8 pm, at Gottlieb Hall in Chicago; Saturday, Feb. 12, at 8 pm, at Nichols Concert Hall in Evanston; and Sunday, Feb. 13, at 4 pm, at Pilgrim Congregational Church in Oak Park.
To close its season, Chicago a cappella debuts an exciting new concert program about its namesake city: Chicago, Chicago. The group will journey in song through time, from pioneer days to the Great Fire, the World’s Fair, skyscrapers, Carl Sandburg, sports, politics, and more. Performances take place Friday, April 1, 2011, at 8 pm, at Gottlieb Hall in Chicago; Sat., April 2, at 8 pm, at Nichols Concert Hall in Evanston; Sun., April 3, at 7:30 pm, at Wentz Concert Hall in Naperville; and Sun., April 10, at 4 pm, at Pilgrim Congregational in Oak Park.
