Chicago a cappella introduces new community outreach program, ¡Cantare! Chicago
CHICAGO A CAPPELLA INTRODUCES NEW COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAM: ¡CANTARÉ! CHICAGO
¡CANTARÉ! CHICAGO BRINGS MEXICAN COMPOSER RODRIGO CADET TO WORK WITH CHICAGO ELEMENTARY AND HIGH SCHOOLS
This fall, Chicago a cappella is thrilled to launch ¡Cantaré! Chicago, a new outreach program bringing Mexican composers to work with Chicago schoolchildren throughout the year.
In 2016-17, Mexican composer Rodrigo Cadet will be partnered with three Chicago elementary and high schools. He will be in residence at the schools for four weeks throughout the school year, working with the students and their teachers. This year’s participating schools are Pilsen Community Academy, Hubbard High School, and Horizon Science Academy. Cadet will write brand new pieces for each student group, and all the groups will perform at a free community concert along with Chicago a cappella on May 12, 2017, at Chicago’s Rockefeller Chapel.
Rodrigo Michelet Cadet Díaz earned his degree in Musical Composition at the Bellas Artes School of Music. He also has a certificate of studies in choir conducting and in orchestral conducting. Cadet has conducted at the esteemed children’s choir Schola Cantorum of Mexico and has performed at prominent international festivals such as America Cantat 2007, and Children of the World in Harmony. He founded and continues to conduct the Symphonic Children’s Orchestra. He also has considerable success as an arranger and singer.
Chicago is fortunate to have a vibrant and visible Mexican community, the fourth largest in the U.S. Chicago a cappella has a long history of advocating diverse musical traditions, and we are thrilled to give Chicago students a chance to learn and perform music that reflects this heritage, while giving them a strong foundation in ensemble singing. ¡Cantaré! Chicago is a powerful opportunity to expand Chicago a cappella’s educational work with an in-school program that has a great track record of success in Minneapolis, where it was created eight years ago.
¡Cantaré! Chicago is a partner program of VocalEssence ¡Cantaré! based in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
